For me … other than the new digital Cumbia coming out of South America, Dubstep is the most engaging and forward thinking production based music being made right now. Part of whats so exciting is just how unpredictable of a genre it is. It’s a RIGHT NOW MUSIC, still being defined and invented.
Its dark, wet, cement music. sounds like the London streets it comes from… not unlike the wet paved sounds of the Portland Or. streets… hmmmmmm
All in. Join the fun, listen up.

DARKSTAR : a very addictive shorty mix of a bundle of 12″ records
11 days and counting! And its really been striking me the level of hope and positivity im feeling about all of this. The thought that things could actually take a turn and… heaven forbid start to get better…..! Its really stirring to me the amount of cynicism and American shame that i’ve been walkin around with these past years.. DAMN. Time for a change.
So this leads right in to a very special gift that i received this week .. the kind of gift that comes to you at just the right time. and simply blows your mind in all the right ways.
My dear friends Sam and Lahela just came back from visiting family in Hawaii. After picking them up from the airport the other night, Sam handed me a stack of records and said “here ya go!”
This treasure was on top of the pile..
thank you Sam!
Lets hear it again....TURN THE SPEAKERS UP!!

Papa Michigan a.k.a Badingo - "OBAMA"
forward this around pals.. lets start a virtual dance party.
XOXO
last week.
PDX had its sleepy brow graced with a very rare appearance by UK dancehall/grime chief THE BUG.
He threw down some great live mixes. Each beat was epic and about 45 seconds long… almost annoyingly so… But for me the abrassion of hearing 50 different beats cut and placed next to each other with very abrupt even unfreindly transitions added to the grime layers. Perfect. I loved it.
…Dude seemed to be really into the fast forward/scatch effect on his mixer….. goofy..
But the bass felt good in me chest.
The Bug live at Rotture PDX #1
The Bug was joined by UK dancehall queenWarrior Queen. The PA was not really as on point as it should have been… thus this part of the set was less enjoyable to me.. nothing worse than vocals that sound like they only comeout the tweeters and live on a different sonic plane than the music..arrgggh. A bit of a let down…
As this track from The Bug’s new ninja tune release, featuring Warrior Queen had been rocking my world for the past several weeks.
So.. when a co-worker said “yo Jesse have you heard the new Lee Perry record?” I instantly passed judgement. “no, and I don’t know if I plan on it.” Yes I admire the man, the legend, and all of his contributions to music I know and love. a whole.. but I think my real connection to his music stops sometime in the early 80’s. Then when my co-worker proceeded to tell me that the new record was produced by bloody nosed party shark Andrew WK. i think i laughed out loud, more out of bewilderment than any thing else. Every thing i have ever known of that dude pretty much falls under my “no thanks” and “shitttty” categories.. .The thought of these two mixing at all seemed like oil and water. Yet it really peaked a vein of intrigue.
After two listens… I was hooked in and really awe struck by more than any thing, the production of Andrew WK. !#$%^@#!????
FOR REALS
The beats are totally fucked!! And this is what my over-stimulated mind is very hungry for right now. .
beats that are fucking up the lazy sequenced norm that we are beaing assulted with left and right..
Something so messy and dense with tones and hidden scribbles of waves and tones. Yet totally bumpin and committed to the traditional dancehall toasters pace and peppered with new new ideas of dancehall. fuckin shit. Never thought id say this.. But PROPS to ANDREW WK!
The songs are totally akin to the music.. about sex, child abuse, santa claus, end times, jesus, smokin’ sensi.
Lee Perry sounds amazing against this music. his words and heavy… and could have many many meanings to reflect upon over the eye glass of these mad times that keep unraveling in our world..
I’m grateful to hear a man in such a quirky yet very influential place in pop culture make such direct and full-on words at the acts of sexual abuse committed by so many catholic priests…
Messy chaos, out of its element, under a microscope = a sense of strange and familiar elated peace
ODD! good.
Props on a deep level and a shake that ASS level..
summer has pretty much began its last encore. Im good with that, my northwest blood craves the those fall leaves, and the cold productive nights inside..
ive been absent from blog central this past month…working to much.. riding my bike, and not ( again ok with me..) been in front of the computer screen that much.
Heres to the muggy days spent floating in the water, sweating behind a hot grill, and late night bike rides…
this jam says it all. peace and love in the summer of 08. you could call this one a theme song of sorts…
and then a little self document.. for that ass. that lovely ass. the streets of PDX.
I WISH THIS VIDEO HAD BEEN TAKEN ABOUT 10 MINUTES EARLIER!
BUT THE IDEA IS STILL THERE… ((my portable battery died in the midst of some potential rap magic and a bubbly WHITEFIELD BROS remix……)) 4th of july was good this year. tied some speakers and my little homemade sub woofer to an old shopping cart and hit the streets. made the rounds bumpin old cassette mixes, digital goodies, and a delay pedal. Had a good stopover at the NO WAR U.S.O event and mixed up some psychedelic cumbia!
thanks to homeboy on the mic..nate for the video…and sam for helping out with the battery!
