Not a peep has been heard from the collaborative bettwix myself and Paul Wig for almost two years… A surprise to us all finds a new banger in the truest sense being released this month FREE to the public by the Barcelona/London based net label www.ailimaf.com. This is a record that sat 90% unfinished for about a year. consists of live recordings of battery powered street jams, studio mashups/experiments, and the usual anything goes if its got soul OD aesthetic.

Its a very searing 14: 29 seconds and stays vital in its urgency and its all out verbal assult and straight-up bangingness .. ((is that a word??)) If anything this recording needed two years of human evolution to catch up to its sonic relevance!

FRESH OF THE MIXING DESK! THE BOOMARM FAMILY MEGA MIX IS HERE!

WHAT IS IT??— For the jump off celebration of this exploration in blogging as a form of sonic community building. We looked to a local crew of PDX sonic pushers. dropped a folder of cumbia and dancehall flavored loops into there inboxes. And challenged them to make a 40-60 second mix/version inspired or drawn from the loops. The 15 mixes received were spun by myself (JMJ Gigante / Gulls) into a tropical flavored PDX mix. Its a 12 and a half minute ride of serious grooves , bass drops, glitch, and heavy sonic spaces… Mad thanks and props to the participant PDX boomarm family!

THE LOOPS– To give you some context.. here are the loops that each artist recieved as a base for there constructions.

The frist is a loop taken from the song “La Samaria” by Colombia’s Orquestra Nunez- From the fantastic SoundWays compilation
“COLOMBIA! THE GOLDEN AGE OF DISCO FUENTES“.

A crew of rappers and musicians from Dakar, Senegal.

Many credit these cats as some of the first pioneers of African hip-hop culture. They stand out

amidst the more generic carbon copy African acts replicating american gangster rap styles.

PBS’s tracks blend traditional Mbalax style Senegalese music, with heavy beats and more traditional rap

aesthetics.

I was lucky enough to have seen PBS live at the height of there rein in july of 2000 at the WOMAD festival in Seattle WA.

Live they were absolutly on POINT. Complete with dancers, drummers, a kora player, a tama (talkingdrum)
player, and a DJ.

….ON POINT!!!!!!

After the set, they did a more intimate “unplugged” style set on a small stage under a huge maple tree.

….lucky for us i was packin’ heat in the form of a sony mini-disc recorder!

Check it.. I just re-discovered this recording in a dusty pile of old mini-discs buried deep in an unpacked box….this is a fully live uncut, acoustic version of the PBS song CAPSI..! As performed live on a tiny stage under a huge tree.

This is a tape I found at the lovely mississipi records last spring.

I did a bit of research on this music but came up empty handed as to origins, and players..

It was released in 1988 on the bollywood powerhouse WESTON COMPONENTS LTD.

My research did point me at ties to muslim devotional music.

..via the cassettes title – SHAHEEDEN-E-KARBALA. which is from what i gather a muslim devotional term.

The music reflects this devotional mood heavily. ……

This tape breathes and swoons, with heavy rythmic drops amist warm warm tape hiss.

The guitar playing is really REALLY something special! For me it was the clincher.

The melodies are  epic and…..You dont hear tones like that every day..!

…I think I hear some old school Crumar synths at work as well…?

find the right moment and give these tracks a jam through your speakers.

enjoy that tape hisssssssss.

I sent out a package of loops to my closest audio twisting friends, complied of a classic cumbia columbiana riff, and a bass heavy dancehall beat. each musican is asked to use the loops as fuel for re-mixl fuel. And creates a short 40second track. once the tracks are compiled they will be sewn toghether to create a seemless rollercoaster of a mix. …suitable for wylin out, mowwin the grass, or cooking up some steaks to.
