Saharan Cell Phone MIXTAPE

SIDE A[audio:SIDE A.mp3]

SIDE B[audio:SIDE B.mp3]

DWNLD!!

WoW!! This is the most exciting damn music!

I was given this tape by Eric from Mississippi records.

He knows my taste for obscure strains of primitive electronic future now soundclash worldish musics. And he tottaly , made my month with this gift!!

This is a mix made by Chris Kirkley, he travels extensively in the Sahel region of West Africa, documenting traditional / contemporary musics of the regions. I got in touch with Chris and asked him to shed some light on where / how exactly this music was compiled..

In his words… “As all the weary passengers sit, they all are pulling out cellphones, and soon the mass is illuminated by little square blue screens. There is no cellular phone reception here — this is not important. They are not making calls. Rather, what ensues is an orchestra of tinny digital audio, a menagerie of sound, beamed out like starlight over the plain.”

“As ubiquitous media devices, they are perhaps most used in sharing and exchange of files, particularly bluetooth transfers of mp3s. While in Kidal I collected memory cards from cellphones and copied loads of mp3s — ranging from Tamashek guitar, Algerian Raï, Coupé Décalé, Kuduro, Hip Hop, as well as loads of Arabic “Habibe” pop, French ballads, Bollywood hits, and Dire Straits — some of which I’ve put out on a few cassette mix tapes.

Please check his lovely website HERE – a fantastic collection of field recordings, writings, photos, and videos. Really insightful work he is doing.

DIAMOND FINGERS

Yo. This is a tribute post to one of my favorite guitarist of all time. Sekou Bembeya Diabate, AKA “Diamond Fingers”.

Born in Guinea in 1944. Key member of seminal Guinean Government bands, Bembeya Jazz, and Syli Orchchestre National.

He was an early pioneer in blending the traditional Griot music of the Mande’ people of west Africa with mainstream and modern dance forms. Specifically creating and incredibly unique and shimmering voice on the guitar.

This isn’t a book report, and im not going to pretend to be an expert on this man or his life.. I just love the music he has made. He has been and incredible influence on my musical mind, his sense of melodic driven rhythm is so deep and unique. .. Here’s a visual and sonic tribute to a real voice in the worlds sonic history. A bad bad man, gracias Mr Bembeya.

Sekou Bembeya Diabate with singer Benny Soumah

One of my Favorite Bembeya Jazz recordings.. Spooky, spacious, and ultra groovy.

SOUND PEOPLE

FRESH off the decks is a brand new collaboration betwixt Paul Dickow (Strategy) and Jesse Munro Johnson (Gulls).

“This recording is drawn from multiple sessions of sonic exploration. The focus of these sessions was on live processed percussion (Dickow), and live processed trumpet, mbira, and bells (Johnson). Resulting in lush and vivid sonic maps full of topography and vibrance. Perfect as an early morning wake up soundtrack, pop it up in your headphones and lay in the grass.

Improvised completely fresh and fueled by countless cups of high powered exotic teas, this represents the best sounds from the first sessions. More to come”

Medicine musicS

…..THE FLU (kind of beautiful)

For such a dry and mild winter out here in the Pacific Northwest, people are dropping like flies to the invisible strains of flu’s and bugs propagating in the eerily dry air.  I have homies who’ve been sick for weeks, my moms had the flu 3 times already this year! Not only are we in a recession, pinching pennies, holding on to jobs we don’t even necessarily want. But now this… forced into fever, sweats, and bed. Yet looped up on a high repeat, with wellness at a very low success rate.  Maybe its a higher powers way of saying…. STEP AWAY, SLOW DOWN..

Or maybe this recession biz has us all worn thin, psychically stressed and weighed down. Microscopically vetting at us.

Either way here’s a spattering of songs that hold a potent dose of ancient wisdom, sonic depth and heavy lidded bliss . Like a bad ass audio vitamin. Digest… Pour one out for the ill.

….These songs are dedicated to fever sleep.. thick deep sweaty and full of nervous energy and sometimes heavy blissed out vision quests.
